If you’re the type of person that prefers to “fish” with a camera instead of a fishing rod, then you need to venture out on Sitka Sound for the shots of a lifetime. Its no secret that the waters around Sitka offer some of the most picturesque landscapes and wildlife you’ll see anywhere.
A short boat ride from Sitka is the small island of St. Lazaria. The island is a designated marine bird sanctuary. Its weathered basalt cliffs and caves host a colorful community of gulls, eagles, puffins, auks and mures. On the lee shore of the island the waters are always calm and inviting. Humpback whales feed along its shores and rafts of sea others can be found floating nearby.
During any given day one can venture out in Sitka Sound and capture intense images of breaching whales, soaring eagles, and paddling sea otters. The marine ecosystem in Sitka is still one of the most pristine areas in the U.S. and should be witnessed by everyone at least once in their lifetime.
